Shoot Thinning! Ξετσίμπλιασμα!

The vines have been growing vigorously over the last month and for the past few weeks we've been shoot-thinning, which means taking off unwanted surplus shoots so that every vine has an airy and balanced canopy - important for the health of the vine.  It's a lot of work but quite therapeutic!!!

Last weekend we were pleased to exhibit our wines at the largest wine exhibition in Greece - OENORAMA!  It was held over three days at the Zappeion in Athens.  Over 250 wineries took part and visitors were able to choose from 1500 different Greek wines!!

Aposperitis travels to France!

Τον Φεβρουάριο ο Αποσπερίτης μας ταξίδεψε στη Γαλλία για την VINISUD 2016, μια έκθεση των μεσογειακών προιόντων!

Last month our sweet wine Aposperitis, traveled to France for VINISUD 2016, an exhibition of Mediterranean products.  Our thanks to Olkas, a specialist exporter of Greek products, for putting Lipsi on the map!

Pruning has begun! Το κλάδεμα έχει αρχισει!

The weather has been warm and sunny the past couple of days so pruning has begun in our Fokiano vineyard down at Panagia Tou Xarou.

Bottling time! Εμφιάλωση!

We've finished bottling our 2015 Psilante and Aloni!

Tasting Day at Sismani Wine Cellar

Last Sunday our wines were part of the 'Aegean Wine Tastings', which took place at the Sismani Wine Cellar in Nikaia, Athens. Οur thanks to Dimitris Sismani who organised a wonderful day in atmospheric surroundings, where wine-lovers were able to sample wines from ten wineries from the Aegean region.   Evaggelia was there to represent Lipsi Winery and to promote our Aposperitis, Aloni and Psilante wines.

Grafting Mandilaria

The weather has been glorious this Autumn and perfect for grafting.  We've been working in our new vineyard hand-grafting Mandilaria onto rootstock planted earlier this year.  Mandilaria is a Greek variety of red grape which will blend perfectly with our Syrah.

Εμβολιάζουμε ένα αμπέλι με Μανδηλαριά!

The harvest is over and for the past couple of weeks, our wines have been busy fermenting - the winery smells wonderful!  It's important to monitor the progress of the fermentation, so we test the wines every day.

Τα κρασιά ζυμωνουν, είναι πολύ σημαντικό να παρακολουθούμε καθημερινά την εξέλιξη τις ζυμώσεις!

Harvest time.

August has been a very hot and busy month.  The pickers have had to start very early in the morning to avoid the heat but the harvest is almost over and the production of our new wines is now under way.  Thanks to everyone who came to help!

Bottling time!

The past couple of days we've been bottling 'Aloni', our dry white, and 'Psilante' our new semi-dry rosέ.  Both wines are perfect for summer drinking!!

Exhibition for Small Wineries at the Zappeion, Athens

On Monday we were at the Zappeion, Athens along with other small Greek wineries.  Our new rosέ wine, 'Psilante' was well received and was listed in the 'Editor's Choice' of  Greek wine magazine 'Oινοχόος' !

Spring is almost here!

The days are getting warmer, spring flowers are appearing and the island is looking very green! We've finished pruning our Assyrtiko and Athiri vines and have started in the Fokiano vineyards.  There's still a lot of work ahead of us!

Winter returns.

Winter weather has returned, with gale-force winds and freezing temperatures, so for the past two days we've stopped pruning and have been cleaning barrels inside the winery where it's definitely warmer!

Pruning has begun!

At last we've had some dry weather with warm sunshine and although it's still pretty wet underfoot, we've been able to start pruning.  For the past four days we've been working in the Assyrtiko and Athiri vineyard.

Winter Vineyard

It's a quiet time in the vineyards right now, though pruning will start very soon.  We've had a lot of rain over the last few weeks and the vineyards are covered with a blanket of oxalis, which grows vigorously on the island at this time of year and is a gardener's nightmare!

A corner of our Assyrtiko vineyard - the old stone building was home to a Lipsi family over 80 years ago but is now used for storage and a view of Fokiano vines with the church of Panagia Tou Xarou in the background.

Magazine Article

Last summer we were delighted to welcome to our vineyards and winery,  a journalist and photographer from Greece's leading wine magazine 'Oινοχοος'.  The magazine is produced twice a year and the feature on Lipsi Winery appeared in the Winter edition 2014-2015.  We are very proud to be included in such a highly regarded publication - thank you to everyone who made this possible!
